Futures contracts are said to be in contango when the near months are priced less than the latter months (i.e. upward sloping curve). It is possible to see whether Futures are in contango by looking at the term structure for the instrument. There are a number of reasons why a given commodity or asset is in contango, this might include external factors like storage costs or it could be an indicator that the price trend is moving lower.

Contango is the opposite of Backwardation.
